Granite City Police Department

Department Structure

 

The Chief of Police (COP) is the highest-ranking officer in the department, followed by one Assistant Chief, One Captain, two lieutenants and four sergeants, one Detective Commander, one Detective Lieutenant, four Detectives, sixteen patrol officers, one SRT Team Leader, four SRT Team Members, and two Dispatchers.

 

The Granite City Police Department is made up of five divisions, the Office of the Chief Police, Patrol Division, Investigation Division, Communications Division and the Special Response Team (SRT).

 

The Office of the Chief of Police

 

The Office of the Chief of Police’s primary responsibility is to provide general management direction and control for the Department.

It is responsible for departmental direction, maintenance of professional standards, administration of the department’s budget and purchasing.

 

The Chief is the head of the Police Department. He, along with the Assistant Chief, oversees the planning and operations of the entire Police Department

 

In his position as Chief of Police, A Collins is responsible for providing the overall leadership and management of the Police Department. The Chief of Police ensures the highest level of professionalism of police service which is responsive to the concerns and expectations of the community. He is also responsible for the management functions of controlling, planning, organizing, supervising, and staffing for the department.

 

Patrol Division

 

The Granite City Police Department's Patrol Division (the Uniformed patrol force) is the largest division in the police department.The Patrol Division is the first responder to all requests for police service. This division provides the full-range of police services, crime prevention, traffic enforcement, accident investigation, criminal investigation, enforcement of local, state and federal criminal laws and the apprehension of criminal violators.

 

The City is divided into 4 patrol areas, or districts. These districts are staffed on all shifts by patrol units. There are additional "floater" units (patrol cars not assigned to a specific area) throughout the city. In addition, patrols with special assignments are deployed as well.

 

Complimenting the Patrol Division is the K-9 unit. The K-9's are specially trained and used in apprehension of suspects, locating missing persons, evidence recovery, and narcotics detection.

 

Investigation Division

 

The Granite City Police Department’s Investigation Division has a Detective lieutenant, and two Detectives. The Detective Division investigates a variety of crimes including, but not limited to Homicide, Armed DetRobbery, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Sexual Assault/Abuse, Arson, Residential Burglary, Vehicle Burglary, Thefts, Identity Theft, Computer Crimes, and Forgery.

 

The Investigation Division is responsible for the investigation and prosecution concerning felony offenses related to all crimes against persons and crimes against property. The Investigation Division operates with a high degree of integrity and pride aiming toward a successful conclusion to each investigation. The Investigation Division works in concert with the Granite City Patrol Division to Identify and apprehend those responsible for committing criminal acts within the City of Granite City.

 

Communications Division

 

Communications is one of the most important services within the Police Department.  The Communications Officer is responsible for maintaining the essential information link between the public, the police officers and other responders in the field.

 

Special Response Team (SRT)

The Granite City Police Department recognizes that the presence of a highly trained, highly skilled police tactical unithas been shown to substantially reduce the risk of injury or loss of life to citizens, police officers, and suspects. Also, recognizing that a well managed “team” response to critical incidents usually results in their successful resolution, it is the intent of the Granite City Police Department to provide a highly trained and skilled tactical team as a resource for the Granite City Police Department in the handling of critical incidents.
