POLICE DISPATCHER JOB DESCRIPTION

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

 

Support the protection of life and property in the community through dispatch and communication support services for police, fire, medical, and other related services.

 

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

 

Works under the direction of the Captain of the Patrol Division.

 

 

JOB, DUTIES, & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Determine the significance of requests for service and assign an appropriate level of police resources.

 

Work collaboratively with district supervisors to monitor and control the response of police personnel to calls for police service or emergency situations.

 

Operate, enter and retrieve information using the Computer Aided Dispatch system (C.A.D.S) and Department forms.

 

Respond promptly and effectively to requests received by radio from officers and/or supervisors for personnel, equipment or other stated needs.

 

Monitor the status of units, which are out of service and take appropriate action.

 

Receive and process emergency and non-emergency calls for service received through the enhanced 9-1-1 system and other means.

 

Contact callers who may be receiving a delayed response to their service request, to determine whether to dispatch police personnel or whether an alternative response is appropriate.

 

Perform all duties consistent with Department policy. 

 

Effectively prioritize calls for service and other information given policy guidelines and personnel considerations.  

 

Make effective and timely notifications as required or directed.

 

Effectively, efficiently, appropriately, and courteously utilize the department’s phone system and interact with persons seeking assistance.

 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIFICATIONS:

 

Ability to hear, read, understand, and carry out written instructions in English.

 

Accuracy in listening to and recording information.

 

Ability to maintain composure and perform duties under high stress situations.

 

Ability to learn radio transmitting techniques and procedures as applied to the dispatch of mobile units.
 
Ability to learn departmental regulations pertaining to the dispatch of law enforcement personnel.

 

Ability to make decisions consistent with established protocol.


Ability to read maps, and to gain a thorough knowledge of the city geography.
 
Ability to make swift, logical decisions and judgments based upon knowledge or prior experiences.
 
Ability to react quickly and calmly during stressful, emergency radio communications.

 

Strong oral communication skills and telephone abilities, including the ability to speak clearly and intelligibly.
 
Ability to speak clearly on police radios, using proper grammar.
 
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
 
Skill in computer data entry.

 

Ability to learn other police department communication, operating systems and related software. 

 

Ability to work independently, with minimal direct supervision.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 

Must be at least 14 years of age

 

Must have at least 3 months experience playing GTAIV on the PC

 

Must have a legal copy of GTAIV on the PC

 

Must have a fully functional microphone

 

Must have Team Speak 3

 

Ability to type at least 25 net words per minute

 

 

WORKKING CONDITIONS:

 

The first week is dedicated to a training program. After successful completion of the training program, Police Dispatchers are assigned to the GCPD Communications Division.

 

 

THE SELECTION PROCESS:

 

Will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: written job simulation exercise, job performance test, typing test, and/or oral interview. Applicants must qualify on all parts of the examination. Qualified candidates will be notified of the date, time and location of the examination.
